Liechtenstein weather retains a temperate, alpine disposition, characterised by warm though wet summers, and mild winters. Because of the country’s almost miniature size, Liechtenstein weather remains uniformed throughout, shaped by the country’s geographic latitude, its vertical topography, and its proximity to the sea.

Wedged between Switzerland and Austria, deep in the heart of the Rhine Valley, with mountains that rise to 2,600 m/8,500 ft, Liechtenstein weather follows similar patterns to those usually experienced in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Despite its mountainous location, Liechtenstein experiences rather mild conditions as it is heavily influenced by the warm, dry southerly wind, known locally as the Föhn.

During winter temperatures can plummet as low as – 15°C, although they usually tend to hover around freezing point. Between December and May Liechtenstein’s landmass is covered in a thick layer of snow, while in areas at about 1,800 m and above, the snow season extends to the month of May.

Liechtenstein weather temperatures reach highs of around 21°C, although normal weather patterns are often intercepted by thunderstorms that occasionally bring heavy hail to the area, causing considerable damages.

Liechtenstein’s rainfalls are rather evenly distributed over the entire year, with an annual precipitation of about 1,000 mm for most parts of the country and 1900 millimetres for the mountainous regions.
